Our Founders
C-Section Silicone Scar Strips
Pregnancy and Baby Co. was never created in a boardroom. It began quietly, over many years, in consulting rooms, hospital corridors, postnatal check-ups, and honest conversations between women.
It began with the same questions being asked again and again.
Questions about stretching skin that suddenly felt tight, itchy and uncomfortable. Questions about scars, hair loss, changing bodies, and products that felt confusing or unsafe to use during pregnancy. Questions asked softly during appointments, often at the very end, when women finally felt comfortable enough to say what was really worrying them.
The Question That Built a Brand
By A/Prof. Indika Alahakoon, Co-Founder, Pregnancy and Baby Co.
It was never one conversation. It was thousands.
Over thirty years of specialist obstetric practice — at Westmead Hospital, in private rooms at Bella Vista and Westmead, across countless consultations with women navigating every stage of pregnancy and postpartum recovery — the same questions kept arriving. About itchy, stretching belly skin. About stretch marks forming faster than expected. About hair falling out weeks after birth. And again and again, at six-week check-ups when new mothers would lift their shirts and quietly ask: ‘Is there anything I can do about my scar?’
I am a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist. I hold a PhD from the University of Sydney, the CMFM subspecialty qualification, and thirty years of clinical experience. I have performed thousands of caesarean sections and managed some of the most complex pregnancies in New South Wales. I have been Head of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit at Westmead Hospital and I am an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney.
None of that prepared me for the gap I kept encountering: between what my patients needed, and what the market offered them.
The C-section scar was the clearest example. Keloid formation — where scar tissue grows beyond the original wound boundary — is a genuine concern for many patients, particularly those with certain skin tones that are well-represented in Australia’s multicultural population. My patients were asking for help. When I looked at what was available, I was disappointed. There was no well-designed approach. No product range that understood the particular challenges of the C-section scar — its location, its mechanical vulnerability, its emotional significance.
After many years of these conversations, I made a decision. If the right products did not exist, I would develop them.
I was joined in this by Katie Midson — my close friend and practice development manager, who had watched these conversations unfold across years of working alongside me in clinical practice. Katie understood what I knew clinically, but she also understood something I could only partly see from inside the consulting room: how much these concerns mattered to women, and how poorly the market was meeting them. Together, we founded Pregnancy and Baby Co.
Our first products were the most urgent. The C-Section Healing Kit — built around medical-grade silicone scar strips, now registered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration as a Medical Device Class 1 (ARTG 519747) — and the Kakadu Plum Belly Oil, formulated around the world’s richest natural source of Vitamin C, sourced from Australia’s Northern Territory and chosen for its clinical mechanism of collagen stimulation in stretching pregnancy skin.
These products were not developed by marketers. They were developed by a specialist obstetrician who had been wanting to develop them for thirty years.
Pregnancy and Baby Co. is still growing. Every new product in our range answers a question that has been raised in my consulting room. Every formulation is reviewed against the same clinical standards I apply to everything in my practice. And every product carries my name because I designed it, I believe in it, and I am willing to be held to it.
My patients trusted me with the most important health journey of their lives. This brand is how I continue to show up for them.
A/Prof. Indika Alahakoon MBBS FRANZCOG DDU CMFM PhD
Thirty years of listening. And motherhood herself.
For more than thirty years, A/Prof. Indika Alahakoon listened to those questions as a Specialist Obstetrician and Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist caring for women through both uncomplicated and high-risk pregnancies. But alongside her clinical experience was something equally important: she was also living motherhood herself.
As the mother of four children, Indika understands pregnancy not only medically, but personally. She understands the physical changes nobody fully prepares you for. The emotional vulnerability that can come with postpartum recovery. The feeling of wanting reassurance that what you are experiencing is normal. And the quiet desire many women carry to still feel comfortable, confident, and cared for in their changing bodies.
Pregnancy and Baby Co. grew from that intersection of specialist care and lived experience.
Katie Midson, Practice Development Manager
Together, they shared the same belief.
Alongside her long-time friend and Practice Development Manager, Katie Midson, the idea slowly evolved into something more meaningful: creating thoughtfully designed products that genuinely support women through pregnancy and postpartum.
Katie, also a mother herself, had spent years working closely with women throughout their pregnancy journeys. She understood the concerns that often continued long after appointments ended. The late-night online searching. The uncertainty around what products were truly safe, effective, and designed specifically for pregnant and postpartum women.
Together, Indika and Katie shared the same belief: women deserved better support during one of the most significant transitions of their lives.
A question asked in thousands of appointments.
The beginning of the product range came from one concern in particular. Over thousands of caesarean births, Indika saw many women worried about how their scars would heal. Some had a family history of keloid scarring. Others simply felt unsure about what to use, when to start, or how to care for themselves properly after surgery.
What should I actually be using on my scar?
After years of searching for products she felt completely confident recommending, Indika realised there was still a significant gap in pregnancy and postpartum care. Women were often left navigating recovery alone, piecing together advice from multiple sources without clear guidance designed specifically for them. That realisation became the starting point for Pregnancy and Baby Co.
Every product begins with the same question.
"Would we feel comfortable using this ourselves, and recommending it to the women who trust us with their care?"
The guiding question behind every Pregnancy and Baby Co. product
That philosophy continues to guide everything the company creates today.
From the Kakadu Plum Belly Oil, formulated to deeply nourish stretching pregnancy skin using naturally derived ingredients and vitamin C-rich Australian Kakadu Plum, to postpartum recovery products developed specifically around the concerns women repeatedly shared, every product exists because a real woman once asked for help with something that mattered deeply to her.
At its heart, Pregnancy and Baby Co. is about helping women feel supported, informed, and cared for during pregnancy, postpartum, and early motherhood.

Co-Founder · Practice Development Manager · Mum
Katie Midson has worked alongside Indika for many years, helping support women throughout every stage of pregnancy and postpartum care. Through countless conversations with mothers, Katie saw firsthand the everyday concerns women were trying to navigate, often while caring for newborns, recovering physically, and adjusting emotionally to motherhood. Her warmth, insight, and understanding of the patient experience have shaped Pregnancy and Baby Co. from the very beginning.
The vision has always remained simple.
To help women step into motherhood with greater confidence and ease. Because motherhood is extraordinary. But it is also physically demanding, emotional, vulnerable, and deeply personal. And no woman should feel like she has to navigate it alone.
Together, Indika and Katie created Pregnancy and Baby Co. with one simple intention: to create the kind of support, care, and thoughtful products they wished every woman had access to during pregnancy and postpartum.
